CPI asks 'powerless' CM to tender resignation

Imphal, January 18 2024: Since the chief minister does not have any power to exercise to resolve the conflict which has been raging for over eight months, Communist Party of India-Manipur State Council (CPI-MSC) secretary L Thoiren urged the chief minister to resign from his post instead of continuing to make futile attempts to hold on to the seat.

In a press meet held at Irabot Bhawan, BT Road here on Thursday, Thoiren said that the people no longer trust the government with the conflict intensifying day by day.

There is no basis for the government to exist when people's lives and property are left unprotected and the law and order situation deteriorating, putting democracy to shame.

The CM's continuous attempts to hold on to power even to the last moment has left the people dissatisfied.

Instead of exercising his powers as the CM, he is waiting for the centre's nod of approval.

Despite being head of the state government, he has proven himself inept to hold the responsibilities which came with the post and as such, he should resign from the post immediately, Thoiren asserted.

He continued that the central government's view of Manipur is not only wrong but unlawful and inhuman.

The union home minister visited the state on May 29 last but deceived the people when he promised to restore peace and law and order in Manipur within 15 days.

It is to be noted that he has not visited the state since then.

Furthermore, the two national highways are being blocked.

The government's move of trying to restore bus service to and fro Churachandpur and Kangpokpi without restoring normalcy in the state is throwing ashes on the eyes of the people.

The Kuki militants are attacking state forces and civilians indiscriminately, while the "powerless" CM is leaving the people to fend for themselves.

It would not be wrong to assume that the central government is fanning the conflict in Manipur, since the central forces are standing by and watching the mayhem unfold as if it is a festival.

The CM should take a concrete stand, he demanded, while informing that CPI-MSC will join the public in launching various agitations.

CPI-MSC assistant secretary (organisation) M Joykumar said that the conflict has claimed the lives of over 200 civilians, while around 14 personnel of central and state forces have been killed.

The central government is watching by while its own security forces are being attacked and killed.

Nothing is being spoken about Manipur proving that the central government does not consider Manipur as its family.

Furthermore, the union home minister has failed to live up to his promise to fend off the attackers and as such, should resign from his post, he demanded.

Joining the media briefing, CPI-MSC assistant secretary (political) M Singhajit remarked that the centre should not just stand by and watch the Kuki militants attack the security forces but carry out military crackdown or any other strict action to solve the prevailing conflict at the earliest.
