AR foils areca nut, timber smuggling

Imphal, January 18 2024:
Assam Rifles on Wednesday intercepted two trucks (Kunda Gadi) in Shankalok village area transporting areca nuts without valid documents and meant for unlawful distribution in the black market.
According to PRO IGAR (S), 150 bags (approximately weighing 12 tonnes) of areca/betel nuts valued at Rs 1.44 crore were seized and subsequently handed over to Forest Beat Officer, Kamjong district.
Meanwhile, a column of Assam Rifles intercepted 13 Indian Trucks illegally carrying areca nuts and timber on Thursday at Kampat Centre and Khampat Khunou village in Kamjong district.
A total of 684 bags weighing 54.72 tonnes of areca/betel nuts and timber valued at Rs 7.08 crore were seized and subsequently handed over to Forest Beat Officer, Kamjong district, the PRO informed.
