Imphal, September 01 2023:
The Kom Union Manipur (KUM) has appealed to all the people not to spread rumours which falsely implicate Kom people in the ongoing violent crisis.
Speaking to media persons at KR Lane near Hatta Golapati today, KUM advisor Voyes Kom remarked that a baseless rumour alleging that ex-Rajya Sabha Member MC Mary Kom lobbied Central Government leaders and stationed troops of Sikh Regiment at Kangathei (Kom) village and made the troops open fire toward Meitei villages has been spreading like wildfire since yesterday.

He said that the rumour evoked deep apprehension among the Kom people of possible attack on Kom villages.
The KUM advisor appealed to all the people, particularly Meitei and Kuki communities not to project the Kom community in the wrong light and also not to harm them in any manner.
He clarified that MC Mary Kom never asked the Central Government to let Central forces open fire upon Meitei people.
Considering the possible impacts of the false rumour upon the Kom community, Mary Kom submitted a memorandum to Union Home Minister Amit Shah today.
In her memorandum, the former boxing champion and ex-Rajya Sabha Member pointed out that Kom is one of the indigenous and smallest tribes of Manipur.
"...we are neither Nagas nor Kukis.
This has been our position for generations", she said.
She said that there are always speculations and doubts against the Kom community from both sides and they are caught in the middle of all problems.
"We have not been able to stand against any forces that intrude into our jurisdiction.
Hence we seek help of security forces to prevent both warring groups from intrusion into Kom villages", Mary Kom wrote in her memorandum.
She also appealed to both the parties to refrain from involving, instigating or casting any doubt on the Kom community as they have very little to do with the ongoing conflict.
The ex-Rajya Sabha Member also appealed to all members of the Indian Army, paramilitary forces and State forces to be impartial in carrying out their responsibilities.
She further urged both the Central and State Governments to give top priority to the current issue and find an amicable solution as soon as possible for the sake of the people, peace and to save lives.
"We all need to coexist, so let's put our differences and wounds aside", she added.
