Many ill after consuming fermented soybeans

Around 40-60 people of a locality in Imphal West district were hospitalised for food poisoning after consuming fermented soybeans (hawaijar).
Meanwhile, Food Safety, Imphal West has collected samples of the fermented soybeans for laboratory testing.
According to a report, the incident occurred at Langthabal Kunja Maning Leikai.
After consuming the fermented soybeans made by a local woman, the other locals started becoming sick and exhibiting symptoms of fever, nausea and diarrhoea.
The sick people were immediately taken to the hospital wherein they were found to be suffering from food poisoning.
So far, around 40-60 patients who show similar symptoms after consuming the fermented soybeans have been hospitalised.
In this regard, Langthabal Kunja Maning Leikai Welfare Club president Chongtham Herojit spoke to newspersons at Manipur Press Club, here, on Friday, stating that the local, who prepared the fermented soybeans, has been doing so for a long time and no such food poisoning incident had happened in the past.
As per the local, the soybeans were purchased from Sareng Gali of Thangal Bazar and as such, there is suspicion if the soybeans were already spoiled.
Meanwhile, a team of Food Safety Imphal West came to inspect the situation and also assisted the patients.
The team also collected samples of the fermented soybeans so as to test them in the laboratory.
Although it is unfortunate that such an incident happened during the present conflict in the state, he appealed to all concerned to be careful so as prevent similar incidents from occurring in other places.
