An NIA Court has remanded a 30-year-old man arrested on extortion charges in judicial custody till November 16 .
Paikhomba Wahengbam (30) had allegedly served a letter demanding money to the Council of Higher Secondary Education Manipur (COHSEM) in the name of a newly formed outfit.
He was produced before the NIA Court Imphal West by a team of Imphal police station after completion of police custody period along with a prayer for judicial custody remand.
In the Court today, the Investigating Officer of the case through Assistant Public Prosecutor submitted that during custodial interrogation, the accused admitted to the charges levelled against him.
He allegedly disclosed that on September 24 midnight, he started designing the letterhead of the new outfit and started drafting a common note announcing the formation of a new underground outfit signed by himself as Yohenba Mangang, finance and account.
Thereafter, he allegedly took out 50 copies of demand notes and started drafting a press note on September 26 claiming the formation of the outfit by mentioning some dummy names as the top functionaries of the outfit.
As submitted by the Investigating Officer, he had personally visited the offices of some of the media houses (electronic and print) and dropped press releases in the drop box/ counters.
However, none of the media houses published the press note.
He allegedly disclosed that he had served demand letters in the name of the outfit to the Council of Higher Secondary Education Manipur via speed post.
The Court after hearing the submissions, remanded accused Paikhomba Wahengbam to judicial custody till November 16 .
