Truck driver rescued, cash aid extended

Representatives of Manipur Drivers' Association (MDA) along with other fellow organisations rescued driver of a sand laden truck, which fell into a deep gorge on its way from Nagaland towards Manipur near Maram bazar on Tuesday around 3.30 am by using cranes and excavators.
Informing this during a press meet held at its Kwakeithel office here on Wednesday, MDA general secretary Sanjay Kshetrimayum said driver Nipuni Mao (50) suffered injuries after his sand laden truck (NL01N 2149) fell into a deep gorge near Maram bazar.
Soon, MDA along with Senapati District Truck Owners' Association, Senapati District Truck Drivers' Union and All Manipur Gorkha Drivers' and Owners' Association rushed to the spot and rescued him.
The truck was also recovered by using cranes and excavators.
The injured driver was evacuated to Shija Hospitals from where he was discharged on Wednesday.
MDA members took the driver to his house after his discharge from the hospital.
The MDA team led by its president Saikhom Budhachandra and advisor Samom Ganga also handed over some cash assistance to the injured driver, he said.
Stating that MDA will continue to help drivers in distress, he urged drivers to inform MDA offices located in Senapati, Sekmai and other areas in the event of any misfortune or have any issues.
All Manipur Road Transport & Motor Workers' Union (AMRTMWU) also extended financial assistance to both the truck driver and his assistant.
Apart from N Nepuni (44) son of Asiho of Sajouba village, Tadubi his assistant was also injured in the mishap.
A team of AMRTMWU led by general secretary Maimom Anil visited Shija hospitals on Wednesday and handed over Rs 10,000 each to families of both the injured driver and handyman.
