Imphal, October 23 2022:
Denouncing the state cabinet's decision of legalising liquor in the state, Coalition against Drugs & Alcohol (CADA) along with other women organisations continued to stage sit-ins in different parts of the state on Sunday.
In a release, CADA information secretary Khundongbam Anand informed that All Manipur Women Social Reformation & Development Samaj (Nupi Samaj), Nongchup Kameng Nupi Samaj and CADA Imphal West District Committee jointly staged a sit-in protest at Nongchup Kameng.
Similar protest jointly organised by Nupi Samaj, Mantak Village Authority, Women Society, Mantak, The Thoubal District United Women's Development Organisation (Thoubal Ima) and CADA was also held at Mantak village in Kakching district.
Speaking on the sidelines of the protest, an elderly man of the village informed that sale and consumption of liquor in the village has been restricted despite the importance of liquor in performing rituals due to its ill effects on health of the people.
Regarding production of liquor in the village, he said that three 'sangbai' of paddy rice are required in a day by a family in producing local liquor.
As over 90 sangbai of paddy are used in a month, sale of liquor is not as profitable as one perceives, the villager revealed.
Protestors shouted slogans denouncing the cabinet decision to legalise manufacturing and selling of liquors during the protest demonstration.
