Kolkata hosts Sangai Festival curtain raiser

Curtain Raiser of the much-anticipated Manipur Sangai Festival-2022 was held on Sunday evening at City Centre, Salt, Lake, Kolkata with various cultural and entertainment programmes.
Traditional Pung Cholom, Thang-Ta, Maibi Jagoi, Kabui Dance and other entertainment programmes enthralled the crowd at City Centre, where many Manipuris residing in Kolkata too attended.
Different handloom products of Manipur were also showcased at the event.
One interesting programme at the event was a quiz related to Manipur and those who answered questions correctly were given attractive prizes.
The Curtain Raiser event of the Manipur Sangai Festival-2022 scheduled to be held from November 21 to December 30, 2022 was organised by the Department of Tourism, Government of Manipur to create awareness and draw tourists from outside to the upcoming tourism festival.
The festival celebrating the Jewel of India (Manipur) and its rich culture, traditions, heritage, art, handloom, handicrafts, indigenous sports, cuisine, music, adventure sports, homestay, traditional songs and dances, heritage walks, cherry blossom, etc., is also an attempt to promote Manipur as the next tourism destination.
The main festival will feature 34 traditional indigenous huts, fashion shows, Sangai Run, tourism pavilion, flower shows, indigenous cultural shows, night tourism, handloom and handicrafts, tug-of-war, Arambai show, Mukna competition, Yubi Lakpi, Sagol Kangjei, Sagol Lajel (horse race), men's international polo tournament at Mapal Kangjeibung, CM's Sagol Kangjei tournament at Kangla, film screenings, MMA among others.
the Brow-antlered deer or Eldi deer or Sangai, the festival celebrates the uniqueness of its only home-Manipur.
The festival attempts to spread awareness about this rare endangered deer endemic of Manipur.
The Manipur Sangai festival also showcases one of the best indigenous handlooms and handicraft products.
One can witness the creativity of the tribes through their unique handloom and handicrafts exhibited along with the three GI tagged handlooms from Manipur-Wangkhei Phee, Sa Phee-lan-phee and Moirang phee.
