The total number of electric or hybrid vehicles in Manipur has reached 1,130 since the implementation of Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid & Electric Vehicles in India (FAME India).
In a written reply in the Lok Sabha, Union minister of state for heavy industries Krishan Pal Gurjar informed that FAME India was launched in the year 2015 to promote adoption of hybrid and electric vehicles in the country.
Presently, Phase-II of FAME India scheme is being implemented for a period of 5 years effective from April 1, 2019 with a total budgetary support of Rs 10,000 crore, he said.
The minister also informed the Parliament that total number of electric vehicles currently in use in Manipur reached 220, diesel hybrid to 156 and petrol hybrid vehicles to 758 thus totalling 1,130 electric or hybrid vehicles.
According to the minister, various steps have been taken up by the government for adoption of hybrid and electric vehicles in the country.
Accordingly, the government had on May 12, 2021 approved a Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for manufacturing of Advanced Chemistry Cell (ACC) in the country in order to bring down prices of battery in the country.
Electric vehicles are covered under PLI scheme for automobile and auto components, which was approved on September 15, 2021 with a budgetary outlay of Rs 25,938 crore for a period of five years.
GST on electric vehicles has been reduced from 12 to 5 percent while GST on chargers/charging stations for electric vehicles has been reduced from 18 to 5 percent.
As per announcement of the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH), battery-operated vehicles will be given green license plates and exempted from permit procedures.
Apart from this, MoRTH issued a notification advising states to waive road tax on EVs, which in turn will help reduce the initial cost of EVs, he said.
