Meetei Mayek in newspapers

One fourth of the total pages of Manipuri newspapers (Bengali script) will be replaced by Meitei/Meetei Mayek from February 15, said the Monitoring Committee on Meetei Mayek Implementation today.The decision was taken during a meeting of the committee which includes members of All Manipur Working Journalists' Union (AMWJU), Editors' Guild Manipur and Meetei Erol Eyek Loinasillon Apunba Lup (MEELAL) today.
The meeting at Press Club, Imphal was presided by AMWJU president Wangkhemcha Shamjai, Editors' Guild Manipur president Khogendra Khomdram and MEELAL head Ingocha Meetei.
The meeting unanimously decided to use Meitei/Meetei Mayek on one fourth of the total pages of all Manipuri papers with effect from February 15 .
Further, the meeting resolved for the monitoring committee to appeal to the Government to include Meitei/Meetei Mayek texts/fonts in the Unicode standard.
Lastly, the meeting also agreed to hold yearly meetings of the monitoring committee to effect smooth and complete transition from using Bengali texts to Meitei/Meetei Mayek.
