Imphal, February 07 2023:
Expressing disdain over the act of All Manipur Bar Association (AMBA) trying to link the 6 student bodies of the state during its demand for clarification from a BJP leader; the student bodies said that this could lead to a loss of respect towards AMBA from the people and student bodies, In a joint press release, the 6 student bodies said that it would not be wrong to assume there is some hidden agenda on the part of AMBA's spokesperson, who attempted to misinterpret the statements made by the 6 student bodies last year, expressing concern of the ill-effects of the drug menace in the society.
It could also be an intentional attempt to politicise the 6 student bodies.
Despite this, the 6 student bodies will always stand strong for the people.
The release went on to say that AMBA's spokesperson either failed to read or comprehend the statement re-leased by the student bodies on December 29 last year.
The statement read "...those in judiciary also must try their best to ensure strict punishment for drug smugglers.
Those in judiciary profession must refrain from representing in favour of those accused in drug cases, who have been clearly identified as drug smugglers, so as to save the future generation of the state.
Instead, efforts should be made to award stringent punishments to drug smugglers, who are the enemies of the society..." .
Questioning if the statement ever demanded lawyers not to represent a case, the bodies iterated that it only urged the lawyers not to favour the accused person(s) confirmed to be drug smugglers) and instead, ensure justice is served.
It is in the ethics of a lawyer to assist in delivery of justice.
AMBA should understand that the student bodies neither urged the lawyers not to handle cases nor interfered in the activities of any lawyer.
The student bodies have always respected and sought advice from AMBA from time to time.
The release continued: "There is no need to drag the 6 student bodies in the great game between political parties.
The student bodies want to remain as pure as possible and seek support and advice from all concerned to do so.
One should refrain from trying to portray student organisations in bad light so as to suppress the people and the student movement.
"In addition, AMBA's spokesperson should speak after thoroughly understanding his/her profession.
Any statement should be made with accurate comprehension and interpretation.
AMBA should further restrain from trying to degrade itself or the 6 student bodies as it will lose the trust and respect of the people," the release stated.
Lastly, it should be understood that any attempt to tarnish the reputation of the 6 student bodies will be detrimental to the people and not just the organisations, the release added.
