Workshop on modern method of fish farming begins

A four-day workshop on "Modern Hygienic Handling Practices of Fish and its Value Addition" commenced from Tuesday at ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region Manipur Centre auditorium, Lamphelpat, here.
The workshop is being organised by ICAR Central Institute of Fisheries Technology Kochi, ICAR-NEH Region Manipur Centre and Bharathimana Fishermen Development Co-operative Ltd Manipur under the CIFT-NEH Component.
Speaking at the inaugural function, ICAR Manipur Centre joint director I Meghachandra pointed out the need to conduct research works on disappearance of various indigenous fish species in the state, and urged the fish farmers to avoid using chemical-based fish feeds but to practice natural farming for increasing indigenous and consumer friendly fish production in the state.
Manipur Cooperative Societies registrar A Valentina, who was also present as one of the presidium members, acknowledged that fishermen have been striving for increasing fish production in the state and expressed confidence that training programme will help them attain further enhance the production.
While stating that k is high time for the state's fishers to bridge the supply-demand gap, Valentina also urged all concerned to start producing more fish for local consumption as well as for export.
The function was also attended by ICAR Manipur Centre senior scientist Dr Ch Bashuda Devi, ICAR CFT Cochin principal scientist Dr V Geethalakshmi and Bharathimana Fishermen Development Co-operative Ltd Manipur founder and chairman Dr Ramanadho Khundrakpam as presidium members.
A total of 50 trainees from Manipur and Nagaland are taking part in the workshop.
