As part of the series of programmes being conducted jointly by United Committee Manipur (UCM) and state agriculture department to make the state self-sufficient in food, a one day farmers' training programme on rejuvenation of farm economy cum distribution of urea and Rabi crop seeds was held on Thursday at Ukhongshang in Thoubal district.
UCM president Joychandra Konthoujam told media persons on the side-lines of the programme that farmers of the state are facing drought like situation due to lack of rain but Minor Irrigation department, which is responsible for providing irrigation water seems to be non-existent.
He said that government must disclose activities of the department to the public and officials of the department should also work sincerely.
Manipur is a state receiving adequate rainfall every year but the government never takes up rainwater harvesting programme and hence the present drought like situation in the state is artificial, Joychandra said and urged the government to learn lesson from states like UP and MP which have no dearth of irrigation water despite being rain deficient states.
The programme was also attended by Sikhong Sekmai MC councillor Lukram Hemlata and social worker Thangjam Manglem.
At the end of the programme, 100 bags of urea and Rabi crop seeds were distributed to local farmers.
