Major Chongtha Mia tribute event held in Tripura

The 115th death anniversary of Major Chongtha Mia was observed at Suryamani Nagar memorial complex of Major Chongtha Mia in Tripura on Tuesday.
Organised by Major Chongtha Mia Memorial Trust, Tripura, the observance function was attended by Tripura Fire Service, and OBC & Minorities minister Ram Prasad Paul and Trust president Gurumayum Nital Sharma as chief guest and president respectively.
Dukli RD block chairman Ajoy Das, Panchayat Samity member Narayan Chakraborty, Chowmohani Bazar Gram Panchayat pradhan Manik Sarkar, Manipuri Sahitya Parishad, Tripura secretary Th Nilkumar, United Committee Manipur president Joychandra Konthoujam, Justice Committee on Anglo-Manipuri War 1891 Martyrs and Freedom Fighters of Kangleipak convenor Birjit Tourangbam and Lamyanba Socio Cultural Organisation president, N Prafulajit Singha were also present on the occasion as guests of honour.
Speaking at the event, UCM president Joychandra reminded that Manipur was once a powerful kingdom in the Southeast Asia region and was able to maintain cordial relationship with the neighbouring countries.
However, Manipur was totally devastated from 1819 to 1826 under the Burmese invaders and this period is known as the 'Seven years devastation' in the history of Manipur.
Nevertheless, our courageous forefathers fought the Burmese and regained its independence, he recounted while informing that construction work on a statue of Major Chingtha Mia was started under the initiative of the Justice Committee in 2019 at Suryamani Nagar in Tripura and was handed over to the public on January 17, 2020 .
