Fortnight-long handloom expo commences

A fortnight-long State Handloom Expo 2021-2022 organised by Manipur Apex Handloom Weavers and Handicrafts Artisans CS Ltd under NHDP and Development Commissioner for Handlooms, ministry of textiles commenced from Thursday at Manipur Public Library here.
Speaking at the inaugural function, Manipur Commission for Protection of Child Rights (MCPCR) chairperson Ph Manibabu Sharma noted that the wave of handloom products is very strong.
Every family had a weaving loom in earlier days.
The weavers could be considered as economic cultural activists as they have been taking huge responsibilities.
In addition to engaging in economic activities and sustaining their families, they also took part in important issues of the state, he pointed out.
Urging the women folk to take up weaving as a profession seriously, he observed that providing economic empowerment should not only be in lip-service.
He further exhorted for using handlooms for school uniforms and assured to extend all possible help to fulfill such initiatives.
Manipur Apex Handloom Weavers and Handicrafts Artisans CS Ltd managing director Ch Mandakini said that women uplifted the Manipuri society by following social norms and tradition and added that they will continue to uplift it.
In order to become self-reliant, people need to work hard with sincerity and dedication.
They should take up their profession with a challenging attitude to bring development in the society.
Moreover, every difficulty should be considered as an opportunity, she remarked.
The inaugural function was also attended by Weaver Service Centre officer in-charge HK Baro, NABARD DDM Kiran Thokchom, Cooperative Societies Manipur ARCS (H/L) T Ratan, District Handloom and Textiles project manager Jocelyn Akoijam and T Ratan Singh as presidium members.
Around 80 stalls are exhibiting various products in the expo.
