An agreement has been reached between authorities of Churachandpur district police and leaders of Kuki Students' Organisation (KSO), Henglep on Thursday, in connection with the alleged arrest and physical torture of Mangtinlal Haokip, chief of Henglep, by a team of district police headed by one sub-inspector Jangkholal Haokip of reserve line on the night of March 28, 2022.Accordingly, the public's demand was granted by placing the responsible police officer under suspension and an order in this regard has been issued by the police authorities.
Also, the demand for sending copies of the suspension order to different high ranking officials in addition to transfer of an ASI was granted.
Earlier, in response to the call of KSO Henglep, the aggrieved public had planned to stage a protest against the police misconduct from 10:30 am in front of the office of DC Churachandpur on Thursday, but it was aborted after the agreement was reached with the police.
However, at Henglep village, a public protest rally was carried out during which the protestors chanted slogans: "We condemn the police", "We condemn the police SI", etc.
KSO Henglep stated that on that fateful night, Mangtinlal Haokip was arrested without showing any arrest warrant by the police from Tuibong Bazaar at the behest of the sub-inspector, who waged a personal vendetta against the victim.
Upon reaching the police station, Mangtinlal was detained and the police hurled abuses and tortured him without informing him as to why he had been arrested, the student body added.
Meanwhile, as per a separate order issued by SP Churachandpur Sivanand Surve, a departmental enquiry has been conducted against the sub-inspector's alleged misconduct as per relevant rules.
It further said that SI Jangkholal shall remain at the reserve line DHQ Churachandpur and shall not leave the station without the SP's due permission.
