Imphal, March 31 2022:
As in other parts of the country, the Congress party staged a protest against the Government over the gradual price hike of fuel and other essential items in Manipur too.
In Manipur, the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee staged a protest at Congress Bhavan denouncing the hike in the price of petrol, diesel and cooking gas among others.
At the protest demonstration, former Chief Minister and CLP leader Okram Ibobi stated that the move of the Government is taking a toll on the poor and low income earners as they could not afford the soaring cost of essentials such as gas.
Saying that the sit-in protest was staged as per the directive of AICC to highlight the woes of the people, Ibobi maintained that the price of petroleum products has been increased on numerous occasions after the recent Assembly election in five States.
O Ibobi further stated that the Congress will always fight the anti-poor policy of the BJP as an Opposition party in the larger interest of the people.
He then urged the Government to stop raising the price of petroleum products and other essentials to save the lives of the poor.
Stepping up the attack against the Government, newly appointed president of MPCC MLA K Meghachandra stated that the BJP is disregarding its assurances given ahead of the Assembly elections in five States including Manipur and are harassing the people, especially the poor.
"Now, even refilling a gas cylinder has become a difficult task so where have all the people welfare programmes of the BJP gone," he asked and added that the ruling party is crushing the people, let alone helping them.
Other Congress MLAs and party leaders also took part in the protest demonstration.
