Imphal, July 13 2022:
Under the aegis of National Highways Development Project (NHDP), a two-week State Handloom Expo 2022-23 was inaugurated by Manipur Apex Handloom Weavers and Handicrafts Artisans' CS Ltd (AWAS) under the supervision of Development Commissioner for Handloom, Ministry of Textiles at Urban Haat, Nilakuthi on Wednesday.
Speaking as chief guest of the inaugural function, DM University VC Prof N Rajmuhon urged all for taking up our ancestors' custom of dyeing clothes with natural dyes made from plants and others.
He then pointed out that 'Kum' plant which was used to dye 'Eyong' products in a bluish tint has now become quite rare.
However, the increase in usage of chemical dyes exported from outside is threatening the existence of natural dyes, the VC pointed out.
He then stated that although there has been a huge advancement in science & technology, the society is at risk if we do not help in preservation 'of the customs and traditions.
Thus, there is a need to make concerted efforts, he asserted, while remarking that even though synthetic products are being produced in heaps, the products of Eyong are also no less.
Presided over by AWAS president A Ronika, the inaugural function was also attended by District Handloom and Textiles Imphal East project manager (Handloom) Th Ibemcha; AWAS managing director Ch Mandakini and Handloom Promotion Council president Ching Tam Luwang as guests of honour.
Altogether 60 stalls are opened at the expo, showcasing varied products of different artisans.
