Imphal, April 07 2022:
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was voted to power with the hope that it would work for the welfare of the people.
However, contrary to the expectation, it has been raising the prices of essential items, stated Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president K Meghachandra and urged the ruling BJP government to lower the prices and taxes on essential items in the interest of the people.
As part of AICC's nationwide 'Mehangai Mukt Bharat' campaign, MPCC staged a sit-in protest at Keishampat Leimajam Leikai community hall here on Thursday.
Speaking on the sidelines, Meghachandra contended that the BJP government is inconveniencing the people by increasing the prices and taxes on essential items and goods.
The prices and taxes were increased shortly after BJP won the recent assembly elections.
Fuel prices were hiked for 14 times within a period 16 days, while the prices of around 800 prescription drugs were also increased along with a 10 percent charge in the treatment of patients.
Additionally, the prices of fertilisers have been hiked and the toll tax along the highways increased.
He continued that the BJP government was voted to power with the hope of ushering in positive changes.
However, the prices of daily essential items and fuel are increasing rapidly.
Farmers are also facing the impact of skyrocketing prices of fertilisers and the fuel meant for agricultural machines.
Prior to the election, BJP leaders vowed to work for the welfare of the people but the present scenario says otherwise.
Congress, however, will stand for the welfare and development of the people.
Thus, the BJP government should do all that is needed to lower the prices of essential items, he said.
