New Delhi, August 21 2026:
Rashtrahit Sarvopari Sangathan National president Sohan Giri has called for safe return of internally displaced persons and updating the National Register of Citizens for Manipur with 1951 as the base year.
He made the call during a joint press conference in Delhi, attended by representatives of the Sant Samaj, various Hindu organisations and representatives from Manipur.
Addressing the press conference, Sohan Giri announced that he would personally visit Manipur to engage in dialogue with local communities, indigenous people and peace-loving sections of society in an effort to explore a lasting resolution to the crisis.
He also called for the launch of the 'Chalo Manipur' campaign.
Sohan Giri said that lasting peace in Manipur cannot be achieved merely through assurances or superficial talks.
He stressed the need for concrete actions on the issue of illegal infiltration and called for updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC) across Manipur, using 1951 as the base year, followed by the census process.
Efforts to restore lasting peace must also include steps to establish a clear framework for citizenship and identity, he added.
"First NRC, then census" is necessary to safeguard the rights, identity and security of the indigenous people of Manipur, he said.
He also called for immediate opening of the National Highways in Manipur, safe and dignified rehabilitation of displaced persons in their original places of residence, and strict action against elements responsible for violence and lawlessness.
He appealed to people from different sections of society to participate in the 'Chalo Manipur' campaign and contribute towards dialogue, peace and a sustainable resolution of the crisis.
Swami Dhananjay, Sadhu Ram Tiwari, Mukesh Jain (National president, Dara Sena), and Netarpal Sharma (National president, Shri Ram Sena) and representatives of the Sant Samaj and various organisations attended the press conference.
Santa Nahakpam, general secretary, United Committee of Manipur, and Dr Kammei Hira Kabui, president, Kabui Union Manipur were also present.
