Imphal, August 21 2026:
In the wake of the scaled-up protest agitation demanding deferment of census operations until the National Register of Citizens (NRC) is updated, police have registered an FIR against the Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation (JFD) convenor Jeetendra Ningomba.
Notably, the ongoing mass movement in pursuit of the collective demand for first updating the NRC before conducting census exercise is being spearheaded by the JFD .
Under the same FIR, Jeetendra was asked to come to Porompat police station by 10.30 am today.
Responding to the summon, Jeetendra went to the police station along with a number of women members of JFD and gave his statement.
Speaking to media persons outside the police station, the JFD convenor said that he would not be deterred by the FIR but continue to work for the people's welfare.
According to Jeetendra Ningomba, senior police officers told him to avoid violence in any public protest or agitation, and also to inform police stations concerned in order to prevent untoward incidents.
He said that the ongoing mass movement to conduct census exercise only after updating the NRC is being carried out in a very democratic manner.
"Any number of FIRs may be registered against for such civil movements aimed at protecting the interest of Manipur and all her indigenous people but I will never retreat or run away", Jeetendra Ningomba said.
He also appealed to all sections of people not to ever back down until the collective demand is achieved.
"Protecting the interest of Manipur and saving ourselves is our inescapable duty', he said.
The JFD convenor expressed surprise over the Chief Minister's statement that the issue of NRC and census will be deliberated in the upcoming Assembly session and a resolution will be adopted.
The Manipur Legislative Assembly had already adopted a resolution on NRC and census twice in 2022 and 2024, he pointed out.
Instead of adopting a fresh resolution, it would be more meaningful if the State Assembly reaffirms the resolution adopted in 2022 and 2024, and takes up the issue with the Government of India, Jeetendra said.
Rather than putting the entire responsibility on BJP, representatives of other political parties and other public leaders can work for the collective interest of Manipur and future generations,
he added.
