Imphal, August 21 2026:
The Greater Imphal Gorkha Association (GIGA) has endorsed the demand being raised by different organisations to implement the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the State.
GIGA, in a press release, said that a comprehensive, credible and transparent NRC is essential for establishing a clear distinction between genuine Indian citizens and illegal immigrants and for safeguarding Manipur's identity and the interests of future generations.
Saying that the Gorkha community has a long and documented history in Manipur and has contributed to the State and Nation through generation of service, sacrifice and participation in its social and economic life, it said that they stand firmly in favour of citizenship verification based on authentic records, documentary evidence and due process.
Protecting Manipur from illegal immigration is a collective responsibility that transcends community, ethnicity and political differences, it reasoned that a fair and effective NRC will address legitimate concerns surrounding the issue of illegal immigration while simultaneously protecting the rights, dignity and identity of Indian citizens.
Further stating that GIGA stands firmly with the people and civil society organisations of Manipur, it urged the Government to take concrete steps to implement NRC in the State through a lawful, transparent and time-bound process.
