Imphal, August 21 2026:
The Coordinating Committee on Disturbance Free Education Zone Demand and JFD Students' Wing, in separate statements, have denounced the Government for closing educational institutions from August 20 to 22 .
Closing schools, colleges and universities is no solution to the crises facing Manipur.
Such actions only undermine efforts to uplift education, said the Coordinating Committee on Disturbance Free Education Zone Demand.
With multiple crises hindering education, the number of school days in a calendar year in Manipur is only around 120-130, and this is reflective of the Government and the Education Department's failing education policies, added the committee.
Instead of closing schools and colleges in anticipation of public unrest and agitation, the Government must address the cause of the crises and resolve it, asserted the committee.
Prolonged failure to resolve crises will only invite public and student agitation, it added.
Education must remain free from all kinds of disturbances including corruptions and flawed policies, said the committee.
The JFD Students' Wing, on the other hand, emphasised and reminded the Government that the educational institutions have been closed even when its stir had exempted education.
Speaking to reporters at Citizens' Club, Soibam Leikai, the JFD Students' Wing convenor, Naorem Wangamba, said the stir against census operations didn't target any schools or colleges.
"In fact, several Government departments including Water, Electricity, Education, Health and emergency services were exempted from the purview of the JFD's stir.
The closure of educational institutions therefore was uncalled for and not needed," Wangamba said.
The Government often resorting to closing schools whenever there is unrest in the State is very fortunate, he said, appealing to the Government to not shut schools and colleges in the future.
The JFD's stir, meanwhile, will continue until the Government takes concrete resolutions and steps to update the NRC before Census, he added.
