World Cancer Day : Offering accurate cancer care, intensification of cancer screening highlighted

On the occasion of World Cancer Day, American Oncology Institute (AOI), South Asia's leading chain of cancer hospitals launched a campaign to bring out a crucial and important aspect of cancer journey.
A statement by AOI, Imphal said that through this campaign AOI is highlighting the importance of mental support needed to the cancer patients to make them feel that they are not alone in the fight against cancer.
When family, friends, and the treating experts rally around the patient, it gives them the emotional strength to cope and get on faster to the road to recovery.

With the theme of this year "Close the Care Gap" AOI's specific treatment regimens are based on each patient's need.

We journey with the patient!" said Dr Shibashish Bhattacharyya, Senior Consultant Medical Oncologist.
He also stated that 6000 numbers of Chemotherapy have been done so far and recently new drugs Panitumumab and Pertuzumab are giving new life to many patients.
Dr Tomcha Thaodem, Senior Consultant Radiation Oncologist, commented, "Cancer care cannot slow down in any situation.
Precision in cancer care is largely dependent on the type of technology that is used for treating cancer and set a landmark at AOI by conducting radiation therapy of more than 900 numbers of patients with the advanced Radiation machine which is one of the latest and most versatile model of Linear Accelerator known as "Halcyon" made by Varian, USA" .
So far a total of 900 cancer patients have been treated with conformal 3D-CRT, IMRT, IGRT and Rapid Arc by FFF beams including 7 cases by SBRT/SRT with encouraging treatment results.
There is no need for going outside Manipur for radiation treatment including the latest technology, he added.
He also stated that the most common form of cancers in Manipur among males are: Lung (19%), Stomach (7%) and Nasopharynx (6%) while Breast (16%), Lung (14%) and Cervix (9%) cancer cases are common among women.
World Cancer Day was also observed jointly by the State NCD Cell and Imphal West District Health Society at Community Health Centre (CHC) Wangoi and Health and Wellness Centre (HWC) Awang Wabagai today with the theme on 'Close the Gap' .
Dr Atreyi Ganguly Team Lead (India) NCD- Palliative of WHO; Dr Y Premchandra Singh SNO NCD Manipur; Dr Joykumar, CMO IW and Dr L Tilakeswari Devi SNO Palliative care NHM Manipur attended as the event as the presidium members.
Dr Y Premchandra Singh expressed satisfaction about cancer screening activities in CHC Wangoi and elaborated on the need of intensification of cancer screening in the rest of the district.
As a part of the program, visit to home of Palliative care patients was done along with CHO,ANM and ASHA at Iram Siphai, Mutum Phibou and Awang Wabagai.
Dr L Tilakeswari Devi SNO NPPC delivered gifts to cancer patients and other palliative patients.
An interactive program was also held with elderly people in the Eldery Garden at HWC Awang Wabagai.
