Thoubal, January 07 2024:
Eco Network Heirok in collaboration with Women Development Committee Heirok conducted a cleanliness drive along the banks of Heirok-Wangjing River in the area of Heirok Part II Khuning Leikai today.
The cleanliness effort was carried out as part of Eco Network Heirok's ongoing River Rejuvenation Campaign and marked the 10th installment of its cleanliness drives, said a statement issued by Shinthangamba Laishram, president, Eco Network Heirok.
Speaking in this connection, Sunita Ningthoujam, secretary, Women Development Committee Heirok urged people to do away with the habit of disposing their garbage along the river bank while reasoning that the trash has spread to the river and polluted it with plastics and other harmful objects and hindered the flow of river water.

Stating that this can also lead to spread of various diseases, she shared that Eco-Network Heirok, Heirok Development Club (HDC), Women Development Committee and Youth Development Organisation Heirok had undertaken the initiative to hire vehicles to pick up garbage from their respective localities.
Maintaining that local clubs and meira paibis of the remaining areas in Heirok are gearing up to initiate a similar mechanism of waste collection, she appealed to the public to keep their garbage securely and wait for the waste pick up vehicles instead of disposing them along the river banks.
She further urged people to avoid burning the waste materials collected along the banks of the river while citing air pollution as a legitimate reason.
Instead she advised people to engage themselves in the business of turning "waste" into "wealth" with the assistance of the relevant Government departments.
