Imphal, October 24 2026:
A sit-in protest was staged at New Checkon today, urging the Government to update the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Manipur and invalidate the 2026 Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise.
The protest was organised by AMUCO, PLMPAM, AMAWOVA, COHR and MSF in association with New Checkon Youth Club.
Speaking to the media, Sanjoy Sorokhaibam, convenor of the five organisations, said they would always oppose any attempt to disintegrate Manipur.
He also stated that the Government of India (GoI) should not take any steps to carve out a Union Territory, autonomous body or Separate Administration by bifurcating Manipur.
Sanjoy alleged that the GoI has been pursuing a policy of divide and rule in Manipur by treating the State as a colonial subject.
Further alleging that the Central Government has been waging a proxy war in the State by using Kuki armed groups, he added that thousands of people have been displaced, while hundreds had lost their lives in the crisis.
