Exempt schools call issued

Imphal, October 23 2026:
The All Manipur Recognised Private Schools' Welfare Association has appealed to all sections of the society, including civil bodies, to exempt schools/education from the purview of bandhs, blockades and general strikes.
While the association understands that the prevailing situation and crises are of utmost importance and have consequences for the whole of Manipur, closing educational institutes would only harm the society itself in the long run, it said in a statement.
The teachers, students and staff of schools too are a part of the society, and they too should take their part in every social movement.
However, shutting down schools would just do the opposite.
Instead of closing schools, awareness campaigns and other programmes which would sensitise the students on social issues may be organised.
Such a positive approach which doesn't negatively affect classes may help students play their part in social movements/issues, said the association.
This appeal to facilitate and ensure disturbance free education at schools, however, doesn't mean the schools, teachers and students will not take part in any social/public issue or movement.
When the situation demands, the schools, teachers and students will join the public and make positive contributions, it added.
The association further stressed that while the occurrence of unnatural deaths in any community is deeply unfortunate, public agitation demanding justice in such cases should also not affect education.
In cases of unnatural deaths, bandhs and blockades are often imposed, shutting schools.
Such practices not only affect school education but also the students' social perception and morale, said the association.
While the families, localities and communities concerned are encouraged to first approach appropriate authorities for the end of justice, if the situation demands, students and the teaching community may help exert pressure on the authorities or the Government, added the association.
Education is the backbone of society.
Therefore, the society as a whole must come together and create a conducive environment for students to learn.
The society must ensure disturbance free education, said the association.
