Govt urged for training of IRB recruits in state

Imphal, January 11 2024: Demanding surety from the government for the safety and security of the IRB candidates who have been selected for recruitment to 10th and 11th IRB, Thawai Mirel has stated that it would prevent the government from taking the new IRB recruits to Assam for training via road.

Speaking to reporters at Manipur Press Club, here, on Thursday, Thawai Mirel co-convenor Paonam Sanahanbi contended that the attempt of the government to take the newly selected IRB candidates for training to Assam via road is filled with 'risk and cannot be accepted unless the government assures that sufficient security protection will be provided to them along the road to Assam from Manipur.

She further informed that the people of the state are in a dilemma as to who to face, the government or the attacks carried out by the Kukis.

On one hand, the Kukis are attacking the Meeteis contrary to government forces preventing Meeteis from thwarting the offensives.

Under such situation, mothers of Manipur are facing huge problems, she said.

While commenting on leakage of heavy fuel from Leimakhong power station and spill-over into streams in Kantosabal and Sekmai, Paonam Sanahanbi said that it is an act to exterminate the valley people.

An enquiry over the incident should be initiated and all those involved punished.

In addition, the abduction and killing of 4 Meeteis from Kumbi in Bishnupur district should also be investigated and culprits brought to justice.

She also opposed the alleged remark of security advisor Kuldiep Singh that there is no foreign hand involved in the crisis of the state while wondering if the security advisor's statement could be construed as confirmation about Kuki armed groups bound by the suspension of operation pact not adhering to the ground rules of the peace process.

Meanwhile, parents of the IRB recruits along with members of Universal Mothers' Organisation (UMO) stormed the southern gate of Manipur Police Training College MPTC), Pangei on Thursday demanding the government to shift the training venue of the recruits to Pangei.

However, Imphal East district police team acted swiftly and controlled the situation.

Interacting with the media, UMO president Sorojini said that the route the recruits would be taking to reach the training site in Assam is controlled by Kukis and they cannot send their children through the same.

She also said that MPTC authority assured safety of the recruits saying that they would be travelling in mix of different communities.

Despite the assurance, they are genuinely worried about the safety of the recruits, she said.

Sorojini further informed that they had submitted a memorandum to the Governor in this regard on December 8 but there is no response till date.

They also tried to meet the chief minister multiple times without any success.

Ultimately, they submitted a memorandum to the CM through his officials, she added.
