Importance of safeguarding ecological balance highlighted

The launching programme of the poster campaign 'Save Heirok-Wangjing River and Clean Water' was held today at Heirok Part - II, Laimayum community hall.
The launching programme was graced by Deputy Commissioner Thoubal, Ahanthem Subhash Singh, IAS; Ningol Club Heirok president, Sophiya Khundongbam; PHED Thoubal Division Executive Engineer, Athokpam Barun; EIACP Hub co-ordinator Dr L Bijen Meitei; Heirok Apunba Lup convener Roshan Thounaojam; Ningthoujam Sanjit of Heirok River Protection Task Force and Heirok Development Club general secretary, Hijam Dinesh as the presidium members.
The programme was jointly organised by Ningol Club Heirok, ECO Network Heirok, Heirok Development Club, Women Development Committee Heirok, River Protection Task Force Heirok in collaboration with EIACP Hub which is under the Directorate of Environment And Climate Change.

SJ Plastic Agency proprietor, Sadokpam Itombi Singh and Federation of Civil Society Organisation, FOCS Manipur general secretary, Angom Punil spoke as resource persons and deliberated on the topic of the poster campaign.
Speaking as the chief guest, DC Thoubal lauded the dedicated efforts of the youths of Heirok for initiating the campaign for keeping the water bodies clean in the wake of the increasing rate of water pollution.
In view of the environmental degradation caused by climate change, the DC stressed on the need of making collective efforts to maintain the ecological balance and safeguard the environment from further degradation.
Citing the climatic change experienced in the State, the DC maintained that people in the State now rely on air-conditioners and air coolers as compared to olden days when the people used to enjoy favourable weather conditions.
Emphasizing on the adverse impacts of plastic pollution, he urged all to resort to alternative means such as using paper bags and other eco-friendly products to prevent the extensive use of plastics and assured that the District Administration Thoubal will extend best possible help towards this noble initiative.
He called upon the local clubs and organizations to designate areas for proper disposal of garbage in their respective localities to avoid littering in unwanted places so as to maintain cleanliness and hygiene.
Expressing concern on the rising incidents of municipality and sanitary workers to deliver their duties effectively, the DC appealed to all to raise complaints through proper channels whenever such incidents occur to enable the competent authorities to take up needed actions against those workers.
As a part of the programme, the DC Thoubal also provided monetary aid to the organisers to procure material components in connection with the campaign.
