Imphal, July 26 2023:
Central forces, suspected either to be Indian army or Assam Rifles on Wednesday allegedly detained Tangkhul Naga Valley Association (TNVSA) former president Shaiza Thangmeiso at Gwaltabi near Yaingangpokpi for an hour without providing any valid reason.
Speaking to The People's Chronicle, Shaiza recounted that he and his friend drove out from Ukhrul to drop off the friend's younger brother, who is studying at St Anthony's School at Sangakpam on Wednesday.
When they reached Gwaltabi, suspected Indian army or Assam Rifles personnel, who were already present at the spot, halted his vehicle around 12.20 pm.
Shaiza continued that he cooperated with the checking-frisking operation of the security forces.
However, they not only pulled at the clothes of the young student, but started asking him (Shaiza) to present all sorts of documents after all the required checking was done.
The personnel accused him of driving a stolen vehicle, just because the registration number belonged to West Bengal.
Nonetheless, he presented the necessary documents but they detained him at the spot for around an hour.
While appreciating the role played by Indian army and AR in the service of the country, Shaiza, however, urged against such unreasonable and arbitrary detention of a citizen.
He further decried the harassment meted out to civilians amid the prevailing situation.
