ZSUM pleas for safety of students

Zeliangrong Students' Union Manipur (ZSUM) has urged all civil society organisations (CSOs), public, government and stakeholders cornered to take up necessary measures to ensure security and safety of students amid the unrest situation gripping the state.
In a release, ZSUM pointed out that many students are facing fear and insecurities due to on-going crisis and often subjected to harassment.
Noting that there might be difficulty in identifying someone's ethnicity in a homogeneous society like Manipur, it said reminded all concerned there are three major ethnic communities in the Manipur and inter-marriage is quite common.
Naga is a patriarchal society where women's identity assimilates with her spouse/ husband.
Therefore, the union appealed, to understand the nature of the Naga society.
Informing that three people from Khunkhu Naga and Leimakhong Liangmai villages were abducted at gun-point by five unknown persons from near the Mantripukri auto parking around 2:30 pm on Tuesday, the ZSUM said that as the trio was traveling to Laimakhong in a Bolero vehicle, they waylaid and taken to Khabam Lamkhai Mantripukhri and released after detention without any specific reason for 20 minutes.
Strongly condemning the provocative act, it cautioned that such incidents will only escalate tension and further demanded authority concerned to take up necessary action While acknowledging out that the prevailing issue is very sensitive, the union also appealed to take extra care in dealing with the current issue in order to prevent aggravation of the situation.
