Imphal, July 26 2023:
The Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) has cautioned of a people's movement against the 50 MLAs of if they fail to perform their duties as people's representatives.
Addressing media persons at its Lamphel office here on Wednesday, COCOMI media coordinator Thokchom Somorendro said that ever since the ethnic violence broke out on May 3, the Meitei community has been under continuous attack from armed Kuki militants in violation of the SoO ground rules.
However, the government of India has failed to take up any action against the armed Kuki militants and this has created confusion over the stand of the union government on the prevailing situation.
He further informed that the 50 MLAs (excluding the 10 Kuki MLAs who are demanding separate administration) should take a firm decision and urge the parliamentarians to discuss the Manipur issue in the ongoing parliament session failing which the public will be forced to take up decision against the 50 MLAs.
The COCOMI, however, declined to specify what exactly the decision would be.
Stating that there has been various instances where the central para military forces deployed in the state have sided with the armed Kuki militants and remained as mute spectators against crimes committed by the Kuki militants against the Meitei people, Somorendro accused central forces of watching as armed Kuki militants torched Meitei houses in Moreh town.
Such cases have deepened suspicion among the people over possible nexus between the armed Kuki militants and the central forces.
Citing the letter written by Kuki Inpi and Kuki Organisation for Human Rights to the then Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh in 2013 for halting the Indo-Myanmar border fencing project, he said that the Mizoram government has been deeply involved in issues of Manipur since a long time.
Though there could be a hidden agenda behind the crisis in Manipur, the territorial integrity of Manipur cannot be compromised under any circumstances as that the people will definitely face such threats unitedly, he affirmed.
