Imphal, July 24 2023:
Even though the May 4 incident of naked parading two women is unacceptable, the video seems to have been released with the ulterior motive to divert public atten tion as well as the core issue, said Manipur International Youth Centre (MIYC) .
It also stressed that it is not the time to get diverted to such isolated incidents but focus on the core issue of narco-terrorism and intention of divisive elements.
In a statement, MIYC remarked that as all-out efforts are on to demonise the Meetei community before the global fraternity Meeteis need to prioritise to debunk such false narratives.
The state is witnessing violent clashes and it is only natural to have unwanted violent incidents.
Burning house of an accused is something the society needs to reconsider as such acts affect the innocent members of the family too.
Besides, continuing such acts will only discourage the people from joining the movement, something which the society cannot afford at this crucial juncture.
There are unconfirmed reports of several such rape crimes committed against Meetei women, which are serious issues and the police need to investigate the same.
Meetei women hold their dignity in high value and many survivors of such atrocious acts would definitely hesitate to come out, the statement said and added that simply not disclosing such crimes does not mean that they had not happened.
Right now, the government is using excessive force in the manhunt of those involved in the May 4 incident irrespective of whether they supported the act or not.
However, on the other hand, the same government is doing nothing concrete to trace the two teens, who are missing since July 6, for nearly 20 days, which is very unfortunate, it added.
MIYC further stated that several Meetei civilians were killed in the Naga-Kuki clash of1992-1997 but the Meetei community never blamed either Naga or Kuki as the community knows that some unwanted casualty is unavoidable.
The MITYC further decried the selective response of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the Manipur violence and also raised posers on some media reports suggesting Government of India agreeing to grant a separate administration to Kuki militant groups during an earlier meeting.
MIYC also raised strong objection against the suppression of Meetei voices by the government by arresting protestors, threatening vocal individuals.
Rallies organised in the valley area by Meeteis are often restricted while on the other hand, the same government is doing nothing when Kukis carry out provocative rallies amid curfew in the hills.
Reports of central security forces aiding the Kuki militants regularly feature in the media, which is a serious issue, the statement said.
