Over 3 Kgs of heroin seized

Imphal, July 24 2023:
Imphal West police arrested one person and seized 3.125 Kg of heroin worth crores of rupee from a truck at Lilong bridge under Imphal West district today morning.
The truck was travelling towards Imphal from Lilong side.
The driver arrested by the police has been identified as Apu Gangmei (28) alias Gaijanlung Gangmei alias Asakho, son of Thomas Gangmei of Lilong Chaobok, Thoubal district.
The police intercepted the truck at Lilong bridge at around 11.20 am.
Initially, the police found 50 plastic soap cases suspected to be containing heroin powder weighing 625 grams approx (including the weight of the plastic soap cases) from the dash board above the front seat of the truck.
The police then seized the drugs, one mobile handset with two SIM cards and a wallet containing Rs 10,500 cash.
The arrested person along with the vehicle was then taken to Singjamei police station for further checking.
Further search inside the vehicle in the presence of an Executive Magistrate yielded more drugs concealed in a secret chamber just above the chassis.
The police found 200 plastic soap cases suspected to be containing heroin powder weighing 2.5 Kg approx (including the weight of the plastic soap cases) .
Police thus found and seized a total of 250 soap cases suspected to be containing heroin powder.
The soap cases along with the suspected heroin weighed 3.125 Kg.
Singjamei police has registered a case.
Notably, amid the seizure at Lilong bridge, people began to gather on the spot and soon a large number of womenfolk gathered and demanded the police to burn the drugs on the spot.
Even as a large force of police personnel led by the Imphal West Additional SP rushed to the area and tried to take custody of the seized truck and the heroin, a commotion broke out between the womenfolk and the police.
Later, when the police were bringing the truck and the seized heroin from the spot, some pelted stones, which resulted to police firing tear gas shells, smoke bombs and blank shots in the air to disperse the crowd.
