Imphal, July 24 2023:
Due to incessant rainfall hitting some parts of the state from around 2:30 am till crack of dawn on Monday, Imphal city and its adjoining areas witnessed water logging indicating failure of the drainage system in areas under Imphal Municipality Corporation.
The rainfall led to artificial flooding of lanes, shops and courtyards in Khwairamband, Uripok, Sagolband, Keisham-pat, Keishamthong, Yaiskul and Wangkhei areas.
Speaking to this daily, a medical store runner at Khwairamband bazar informed that as his ordered goods (medicines) were received late on Sunday, he just left the same on the floor for assembling the next day.
However, the rainfall flooded his shop and caused loss of medicines and some other commodities.
The shopkeeper further stated that Imphal city experiences water logging at the slightest rainfall due to the poor drainage system.
It would not be right to blame the government alone for the flash floods happening in Imphal area as the public are also equally responsible.
If the people do not dump solid waste into the drains, the problem would not occur, he opined, and suggested that houses and shops should not be constructed overlapping the drain area.
The government also needs to take actions against those violating rules and expanding their shops over the drains, he stressed.
