Police fire to foil MU students' peace rally

Imphal, July 24 2023:
Police resorted to firing tear gas shells to foil a peace rally organised by Manipur University Students' Union (MUSU) from MU to Singjamei on Monday.
Large number of MU students taking part in the rally were halted by Singjamei police in Kakwa area.
As the rallyists tried to move on, police resorted to firing tear gas shells to disperse the students, who, however, remerged and continued the peace rally till Singjamei.
Speaking in this regard, MUSU president Thokchom Sonamani said that the conflict that broke out since May 3 has affected the varsity students.
However, both the state and central government are not making any serious effort to end the violence.
As such, the students are in apprehension that they will lose their academic year and consequently decided to take out a peace rally demanding end to the conflict and restoration of peace, he added.
Earlier, as the police prevented the rally from proceeding into Kakwa area, tensions escalates with heated argument taking place between the police and the protestors.
The police, then resorted to, firing of tear gas shells at the rally to disperse the protestors.
No injury to any student Was reported in the clash between the police and the students of the Manipur university.
