Court grants bail to JAA, Daftry

The Special Court (Prevention of Corruption Act) Imphal West today ordered the release of Junior Accountant Assistant (JAA) and Daftry of Imphal Treasury Office on bail.
The two accused, Junior Accountant Assistant Moirangthem Bijoy (43) and Daftry Lalminthang Lotjem (57) were given bail on execution of Rs 1 lakh PR bond each.
Notably, they were arrested on charge of demanding bribes to release the pension of an ex-serviceman.
They had allegedly demanded a total of Rs 20,000 from the retired Army man.
Moirangthem Bijoy hails from Singjamei Chinga Mathak Nameirakpam Leikai and Lalminthang Lotjem hails from Denglen Village, Kangpokpi.
The ex-serviceman had complained that he had approached the Imphal Treasury Office many times to claim his due pension since April 2022.M Bijoy had allegedly-demanded Rs 15,000 from the ex-serviceman for disbursing his monthly pension while Lalminthang had allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs 5,000.The ex-serviceman in his complaint had also alleged that accused persons had threatened that they would not approve further pension if they are not given the money asked.
During the hearing today, the Special Public Prosecutor submitted that a team of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Police Station has recovered Rs 55,000 including an amount of Rs 5,000 given by the complainant from the possession of M Bijoy Singh.
A sum of Rs 4,000 including Rs 1,500 given by the complainant have also been recovered from Lalminthang Lotjem.
After hearing the submissions of the prosecutor and the defense counsel, the Court observed that the investigation of the case is nearly completed and all the necessary legal procedures are also completed.
The accused persons are Government employees and as such there is no likelihood of them absconding.
The guilt of the accused persons will be determined at the final hearing of the case, said the Court.
The Court then ordered their release on bail on their execution of a PR Bond of Rs 1 lakh each with one surety of the like amount.
The Court also directed the two accused to co-operate with the investigation and ordered that they shall appear before the Investigating Officer or the Court as and when directed.
They shall not influence any of the prosecution witnesses and they shall not leave the State without prior permission from the Court, the bail order read.
