Accused in AR convoy ambush case jailed

The court of Special Judge (NIA), Manipur on Tuesday sent a cadre of the proscribed Manipur Naga People's Front (MNPF), who is accused of involvement in the ambush laid on a 46 AR convoy in Sialseh village, Churachandpur district on November 13, 2021, to judicial custody.
In connection with the case taken up by NIA regarding the incident, accused MNPF cadre Machukring Zamshim Shim-ray alias Ningkhan (20) s/o (L) Yangmi Zamshim Shimray of New Canaan Village, Ukhrul District was produced before the court on Tuesday with a prayer for judicial remand.
The ambush had left the Battalion's CO Col Viplav Tripathi, his wife and son, and 5 other personnel dead and 6 others injured.
The proscribed People s Liberation Army (PLA) and MNPF jointly claimed responsibility for the attack.
Accused Machukring, who is currently in police custody, was involved in the said attack as a cadre of MNPF.
He was arrested by an NIA team on November 5 and produced before the duty magistrate the next day, which then remanded him in police custody.
On questioning, Machukring admitted to his direct involvement in the attack and also the involvement of other top leaders of the two outfits.
As the investigation is still in the initial stage, the PP of NIA made a prayer for remanding the accused to judicial custody.
The court, after listening to submissions of both sides, observed that as there are sufficient prima facie materials supporting the direct involvement of the accused in the ambush and as the investigation is still in the initial stage, there is the need for further interrogation.
Thus, it remanded the accused to judicial custody till November 29 and rejected the bail application submitted by the counsel of the accused, treating it as a regular bail application.
