Imphal, November 15 2022:
The Joint Action Committee (JAC) formed against the alleged assault of street vendor Apabi from Lilong Mairenkhong has imposed an indefinite bandh along the NH-102 Indo-Burma Road.
The bandh has been called denouncing the Government's failure to take up disciplinary actions against the police personnel of City Police involved in the alleged assault of Apabi despite appeals from CSOs and student bodies, said a press note by the JAC.
It may be mentioned that Apabi, a street vendor who sells bananas at Ema Keithel was picked by City Police personnel on November 9 last based on accusations of two women who claimed that Apabi had picked up their bag.
She was severely assaulted at the Police station and was later released since no evidence was found against her.
The JAC has informed that during the indefinite bandh, medical, water, electricity and other emergency concerns will be relaxed and cautioned that the Government will be held responsible for any untoward outcome.
Meanwhile, members of All Manipur Muslim Organisations Co-ordinating Committee (AMMOCOC), Pangal Street Vendors' Association and UMMWDO staged protest at Hapta against the alleged ill-treatment meted out on Apabi by the City Police personnel.
Condemning the actions of the Police personnel who allegedly assaulted an innocent woman based on groundless claims, the protestors while urging the Government to take up stringent actions against the police personnel involved expressed discontent over the Government's indifference attitude on the matter.
They also warned of intense agitation if the Government fails to fulfil the demand at the earliest.
