Imphal, December 17 2022:
In a suspected case of arson fuelled by land dispute between two neighbouring communities of Manipur and Nagaland, a Manipur-bound truck was set ablaze at Viswema, Kohima district at around 10 pm last night.
The truck transporting construction materials from Dimapur to Imphal belongs to one S Thonii s/o Shekho of Tungam Khullen village, Senapati district.
Suspected SAPO volunteers detained and set ablaze the truck even after the identity of its owner was revealed.
According to sources, the volunteers even physically assaulted and attempted to murder the driver and his assistant.
Another truck carrying sand was attacked in Nagaland and its wind-shield was smashed.
Notably, the Southern Angami Public Organisation (SAPO) banned Mao people from entering the 'southern Angami jurisdiction' in connection with a dispute over ownership of Dziiko and Koziiri.
The truck was set ablaze at Kohima in the backdrop of the prohibition.
Except for the report that a truck has been set ablaze, no other details could be obtained, said Mao Police.
Students of Don Bosco School, Maram went for an external excursion in eight buses yesterday but volunteers of a student organisation, fearing untoward incidents, pulled down all the Mao students.
The excursion went ahead after leaving behind all Mao students.
Notably, some Angami people raised strong objection when a trekking expedition was carried out to Dzuko Valley during the recent Manipur Sangai Festival.
Meanwhile the Senapati District Truck Owners' Association Manipur has strongly condemned the violence perpetrated by SAPO and SAYO volunteers and the act of taking the law into their hands.
The association added that such unlawful act must be booked without delay.
