Nemcha pitches for promotion of local products

Commerce and industries minister Nemcha Kipgen has called upon the people to use local products as much as possible to promote the fledgling industries in the state and contribute in bringing economic development.
Nemcha visited Panthoibi Manipur Emporium run by Manipur Handlooms and Handicrafts Development Corporation Limited in Paona Keithel on Saturday evening and expressed delight on seeing the wide range of local handloom and handicraft products displayed there.
She praised the corporation for the initiative of setting up the emporium to provide a unique place where tourists from all over the world can visit and purchase mementos of their journey.
Responding to a poser raised by The People's Chronicle during her visit, the minister said that handloom and handicraft sectors are one of the main sources of the state's economy.
At the same time, the state is spending huge amount in buying products brought in from other states, which otherwise could be avoided by using alternate items produced in the state as much as possible.
Doing so would help in promoting the handloom and handicraft sectors as well as in improving economy of the state, she said.
The minister further informed that she and the offices under her have started using local handloom products for table covers, curtains and sofa covers.
BJP office in Kangpokpi, which will be inaugurated shortly, will also use local handloom products, she said, while recalling how the chief minister made a clarion call for using local handloom products in offices and handicraft products for decorative purposes.
Nemcha also said that the department is taking up measures to meet the demand.
As part of the measures, the department will first send an enquiry to health and education department seeking requirement details.
Moreover, the department is planning to organise training programme for weavers and artisans to improve their skills, she added.
