Govt yet to acknowledge writers' contribution: Akademi awardee

"Ahingba Upanyas" and "Nongthangleima Amasung Taibang", two books penned by Manipur University School of Humanity dean Professor Nahakpam Aruna were released in a function held at Manipur Press Club, here, on Saturday.
Organised by Leimarol Khorjeikhol (Leikol), the book releasing function was attended by LEIKOL president Kshetrimayum Subadini as president, Sahitya Akademi awardee Yumlembam Ibomcha as chief guest and Imphal College principal Moirangthem Priyobrata as guest of honour.
Speaking on the occasion, Yumlembam Ibomcha reminded that writers have an important role to play in guiding the society to the right path and rectifying its wrongs.
However, the state government is yet to acknowledge the contribution of writers, he lamented.
He continued that Manipur is known for its sports and cultural prowess.
As such, the government claims to be focused on these two disciplines, while its ministers and MLAs have said good words with regard to culture, sports and literature.
But expressing a few lines of support is not enough when concrete action is need to support the development and promotion of culture and literature.
This is highly concerning, he remarked, while adding that no steps have been taken to encourage writers till date.
In her speech, Prof Aruna said that the book "Nongthangleima Amasung Taibang" was first published in Bengali script in 2001.As the younger generation are now taught in Meetei Mayek (script) and they no longer understand Bengali, the second edition of the book was published in Meetei Mayek.
Meanwhile, the book, "Ahingba Upanyas" is a compilation of 15 essays discussing the works of renowned authors like Hijam Anganghal, Rabindranath Tagore, Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, Indira Goswami, etc., she conveyed.
On the other hand, "Thong Lonsiba Amamba Ka", a book translated from Hindi to Manipuri by Dr Rajkumar Mobi Singh was released in a function organised by Manipuri Literary Society, Imphal at Manipur Hindi Parishad, Old Assembly Road, here, on Saturday.
The function was attended by Manipuri Literary Society, Imphal vice president Naorem Lokeshwar Singh as president, DM University associate professor Dr Sagolsem Lanchenba Meetei as chief guest and writer/critic Laishram Memo as guest of honour.
Dr Binita Akoijam shared her thoughts on the book.
