Awangbow Newmai launches "Up Scaling Aapda Mitra Scheme"

Relief and Disaster Management Minister Awangbow Newmai on Wednesday launched the "Up-Scaling Aapda Mitra Scheme" at Panchayat Resources Center, District Mini Secretariat Complex, Bishnupur district.
As part of the scheme, training of community volunteers in disaster response will be provided in 350 districts of India under the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).
The training programme will be conducted in 8 districts of Manipur.
The 12 days long training programme is organised by the Department of Relief & Disaster Management in collaboration with State Disaster Management Authority, Government of Manipur and Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan Bishnupur.
Two teams with 50 volunteers each will participate in the training.
The launching ceremony was attended by Minister Awangbow Newmai; Additional Chief Secretary, Department of Relief & Disaster Management, Government of Manipur, MH Khan; DC Bishnupur, Lourembam Bikram; Deputy Director Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan Bishnupur district, Dr Salam Dhanachandra as presidium members.
Speaking on the occasion, Awangbow Newmai stated that the clearing of forest area has resulted in climate change resulting in many natural disasters.
Stressing on the importance of local volunteers, the Minister further mentioned that it is not feasible to just wait for the SDRF, NDRF and Red Cross during the time of disaster.
