Imphal, April 06 2022:
The two-day academic discourse on 'Eeyong Phee Amasung Manipuri Khunnai' organised by MUSU and six student organisations (AMSU, MSF, DESAM, KSA, SUK and AIMS) at MIMS hall, Manipur University concluded on Wednesday along with adopting several recommendations.
The recommendations include demanding the government to form policy and programme for improving conditions of local weavers and the handloom products, which have been taking vital role in enhancing economy of the state and protection of the cultural identity.
It also recommended giving awareness on building up economic nationalism and using handlooms products as uniforms of schools and colleges.
Moreover, efforts should be made to use local handloom products in government and private institutions like hospitals wherever possible, it continued, while adding that pressure should be exerted on the government for getting GI tag for the handloom products and designs of the state.
A design bank/handloom museum should be set up by the government and should also check whether the handloom products which have received GI tag were being imported to the state by copying the same.
The government should also give extra attention for promoting locally produced handloom products, the discourse recommended.
