Imphal, December 20 2022:
At least four street vendors were injured in a confrontation with the police at Khwairamband Keithel, today.
Reportedly, a number of street vendors of Temporary Market Shed attempted to storm the office of Imphal Municipal Corporation (IMC) over the issuance of a notification which allows them to sell their wares and vegetables only from 6 am to 12 noon at Khwairamband Keithel.
The protesters tried to storm the office of IMC from BT Road side and Old Assembly Road but both their endeavours were cut short by the police, following which a heated argument broke out between the two sides.
As the protesters didn't show any sign of leaving the place, the police lobbed chili grenades to disperse them (the street vendors) and in the process four protesters fell unconscious after complaining of shortness of breath.
They were treated at RIMS.
Speaking to the media, one of the protesters said that the restriction placed by the IMC on the working hours of street vendors of the temporary market shed has put many of them in a very difficult situation, unable to make ends meet for their families.
She continued that they will launch more intense modes of agitation if the notification issued by IMC is not withdrawn.
