Their hard work and dedication has shown that the soil can grow better produce which not only brings monetary benefits but also gives the satisfaction of having given something useful and healthy to the society thus overpowering the evil of opium, said PRO IGAR (S) in a release.
It may be mentioned that state government launched a new scheme called 'Cultivation of Horticulture Crops as an Alternative to Poppy Cultivation in Hill Areas' to fight against opium poppy production in Manipur with an aim to conserve forest areas, to uproot poppy cultivation, drugs trafficking and its consumption ensuring a better future for the younger generations.
Manipur has been fighting the menace of drugs for a very long time.
Ihe state is being used as a conduit for transporting drugs from Myanmar to India's heartland.
The drug cartel has been exploiting the remoteness and poverty of locals especially people residing in border villages to undertake poppy cultivation.
Government is committed to its 'War on Drugs' campaign and has a multipronged approach to provide economically viable alternative livelihood to poppy cultivators with a sustainable integrated farming system, the PRO added.
