Imphal, February 23 2022:
The proposed 48 hours bandh called by Umanglai Kanba Apunba Lup (UKAL) against the decision of the Election Commission of India (ECI) to conduct state assembly election on March 5 (Saturday) has been called off.
UKAL had earlier declared imposition of total bandh from February 24 against ECI's decision to hold election on March 5, which coincides with day of traditional Meitei ritual of 'Sharoi Ngaroi Khangba', which is observe on every Saturday of Lamta month of Meitei calendar every year for the safety and prosperity of the community.
According to an UKAL statement, the bandh plan has been dropped as some political workers started taking advantage of the bandh and attempted anti social activities.
Another reason for withdrawing the agitation is that UKAL fears possible clash among indigenous people of the land ahead of election though the bandh was genuinely called against ECI's dishonourable act, the statement said and appealed to people to remain calm and be ready to launch other forms of agitation.
