Imphal, March 30 2022:
On Wednesday, women vendors of the newly constructed temporary market confronted police at the market itself after the latter restricted them from plying their trade.
The incident occurred when police barred women vendors, who were trying to sit in the temporary market for selling their goods, on the ground that authority concerned did not issue any order for commencing operation of the temporary market.
The conflict was later resolved after the magistrate came to the spot.
Speaking to media persons, Road Side Vendors' Welfare Association general secretary Th Kiranmala expressed her gratitude to the government for constructing a new market shed for the women vendors who have been earning their livelihood in the temporary market for the last one decade.
However, it is unfortunate that authority concerned did not allow them to sit in the new market shed though the construction has been completed long time back.
Stating that the women are sustaining their families by selling goods in the market, she pointed out that the women vendors are not from well to do families.
The women vendors of temporary market have been per severing for a long time even before Covid-19 pandemic, she said, while adding that all they want is to allow them to continue their economic activities as construction of the market shed has been completed.
Moreover, the women vendors might benefit as Cheiraoba festival is round the corner, she added.
The women vendors came out to resume their activities in the market as authorities concerned failed to issue order for allowing them to use the market despite completion of its construction for long, Kiranmala stated, while urging the authorities to issue the order for allowing them to resume economic activities in the newly constructed market shed.
