Imphal, March 30 2022:
IGP Zone I Themthing Ngasangvahas categorically stated that Imphal-Moreh road has become a favourable route for trafficking due to its closeness to Myanmar.
Addressing a one day workshop on "Combating child trafficking in Manipur" at Chingmeirong today, the senior police officer said that most of the traffickers are high profile individuals and have international links.
Continuing that children are being trafficked for engagement in bonded labour, prostitution and organ trade, he added that some of the high profile traffickers are based in Malaysia and Singapore.
He further stated that police alone cannot fight human trafficking and as such spreading awareness about this nature of crime is of utmost importance.
Director of Social Welfare Ngangom Uttam Singh stated that every parent should be very watchful of groups which promise jobs or free education for their wards without valid proof as the same manoeuvre is commonly used by child traffickers.
He also said that engagement of children as domestic helps should be abolished to protect their rights.
Claiming that publication of advertisements for job recruitment by providing only a phone number is very common, the Social Welfare Director appealed to all concerned to crosscheck such advertisements so that the job seekers don't fall in the trap of traffickers.
Chairperson of Manipur Commission for Protection of Child Rights (MCPCR) Phurailatpam Manibabu Sharma also attended the programme.
In the technical session, former member MCPCR, Montu Ahanthem spoke on "To assess the factors responsible for trafficking of children both at source and destination during post lockdown" while Additional Superintendent of Police CID (CB), N John Singh deliberated on "Identification of source, transit & destination for trafficked'' kidnapped children and to understand the modus operandi of traffickers/agencies" .
