Imphal, October 12 2021:
Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba has called upon the Meitei Pangal community settling in the state to use their respective surnames.
Speaking as chief guest at the 137th anniversary of settlement by Meitei Pangal' organised at Tarahei Konjil by Meitei Pangal Ee-gee Khongul Leeba Foundation Committee on Tuesday, titular king of Manipur Sanajaoba highlighted Meitei Pangal migrated during the reign of king Khagemba and married Meitei women to settle in Manipur by assigning surnames.
Informing that arrival and settlement of the Meitei Pangal have been well-documented, he pointed out that there should be no Meitei Pangal that does not have a specific surname.
Whether it's the changes brought in the course of time, some of the Meitei Pangals do not use their surnames, he observed, while adding that the use of surnames signify that they are the indigenous Meitei Pangal.
Pointing out that the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly election will be held in early next year; Leishemba Sanajaoba said that election is a beautiful part of democracy which empowers citizen to elect their representatives.
However, it is unfortunate that people form groups and fight against each other all under the garb of the election, he said.
He further exhorted the CSOs, local clubs and meira paibi activists to take responsibility for making a free and fair election so as to elect a people-centric government.
Leishemba Sanajaoba also laid the foundation stone for the new office building of the Committee as a part of the event during which a two-minute silence was observed as a mark of respect to the departed souls of the village.
The observance was attended by Committee president Buyamayum Yaima Shah, chief advisor Khullakpam SM Salim Shah, Lilong Haoreibi College principal Dr Ra-heijuddin Sheikh and Naoriya Pakhan-glakpa ex-MLA Soibam Subashchandra as presidium members.
